Lego's Transition to Sustainable Bricks
Lego Commits to Phasing Out Fossil Fuels in Bricks by 2032
Lego plans to phase out fossil fuels in its plastic bricks with renewable and recycled materials by 2032. The company is willing to pay up to 70% more for certified renewable resin to achieve this, with a goal of using more sustainable materials in production. Despite the higher costs, Lego is committed to absorbing the expenses without passing them on to customers. This move comes at a time when there is a surplus of cheap virgin plastic in the market, driven by major oil companies' investments in petrochemicals. Lego's suppliers are using bio-waste and recycled materials as substitutes for virgin fossil fuels in plastic production. The toy industry as a whole is shifting towards using more sustainable materials, with companies like Hasbro and Mattel also exploring plant-based or recycled materials in their products.
